To Install Android 7.1.2 Nougat on Galaxy S4 Mini or any Custom ROM, your phone must have TWRP Recovery or any custom Recovery installed. If you don’t have one, then first install Custom Recovery on your Galaxy S4 Mini.

Steps for How to Install Android 7.1.2 Nougat on Galaxy S4 Mini (Custom ROM, AICP)

  1. First of all, Download the AICPOS Zip and GAPPS Zip file from the below given link.
  2. If you have downloaded the zip file in your computer, then connect your device to computer using USB cable.
  3. Now move the downloaded AICPOS and Gapps zip to the root of internal memory of your smartphone.
  4. After transferring the zip file, Now turn your phone off. Reboot to recovery by pressing the Volume Down + Power button simultaneously. (You can use Volume Up and Down buttons in order to scroll up and down and you can press Power key to select.)
  5. Before installing the custom ROM, it’s better if you Wipe all the data by Clicking the Wipe button and Select Advanced Wipe – Tick all except Internal Storage
  6. Swipe to WIPE
  7. Now Click the Install Button to install the AICPOS zip file.
  8. Now Browse through the files of Internal memory where you have uploaded the Zip file of Custom Rom (better move the custom ROM zip into root of your internal memory)

Even though Samsung has not provided the update, there is an alternative way to update Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini to Android 5.1 Lollipop.

The CyanogenMod Lollipop build is also available for Galaxy S4 mini using which you can experience Lollipop on it. CyanongenMod ROM is a custom firmware which is not released by Samsung officially. But, CM firmware is close to stock firmware with few additional features.

Steps to be followed

  1. Download the CyanogenMod 5.1 package to your PC.
  2. Download Google apps package to your PC.
  3. Connect the Galaxy S4 Mini to the PC and transfer the downloaded packages to memory of the device. Make sure you copy them to root folder and not in sub-folders.
  4. Once the transfer is complete, disconnect the device and turn off it.
  5. Now enter the recovery mode on Galaxy S4 mini following below step:
    • Turn on the device by holding Volume up+Home+Power buttons together until you see the recovery mode.
  6. Once the custom recovery mode is launched, you can see a list of options. Most of these options cannot be found in stock recovery mode. Among these options, find and select wipe data/factory reset(Use Volume buttons to navigate and Power button to select).
  7. Next to data wipe, perform a cache wipe by selecting wipe cache partition.
  8. Getting into advanced options, navigate to advanced>>select wipe dalvik cache.
  9. After completion of all above steps, get back to main menu and select install zip from sdcard. Using Power and Volume buttons navigate to previously copied CyanogenMod 5.1 package and choose it. Confirm the installation in next step. Do not interrupt the installation process.
  10. Next to completion of installation of ROM, follow the Step 9 again and choose Google apps package now and let the installation complete.
  11. After completion, select reboot system now to restart the device.

That’s all! the device now reboots running Android 5.1 Lollipop. You’ve successfully updated Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini to Android 5.1 Lollipop via CyanogenMod firmware. To confirm the installed version, go to Settings>>About phone where you can see Android version as 5.1.
